Subject choice guidance is a crucial step in the process of moving towards a career or field of study. In Grade 9, many learners are still very uncertain about their futures, and choosing subjects that may ultimately impact their career paths can seem overwhelming.
If we think back to when we were in Grade 9 (Standard 7), how many of us would have chosen a very different set of subjects had we known more about ourselves, our drives and our passions? How many of us had a fantastical idea of what our ‘chosen’ careers would look like only to be disappointed years later? If only we had been given the opportunity to explore our aptitudes, personalities, interests, and values. While we cannot change the past, we can certainly help our children towards building their futures.
Career (and subject) choices have expanded exponentially from what was available 15 years or more ago. This can be confusing for parents who are not aware of the different types of jobs or what they entail, least of all what subjects are needed. Apart from this, there are so many tertiary study institutions with many of them having their own entry requirements. In some cases, their websites are confusing and difficult to navigate leading to an increased sense of frustration. Subject choice guidance assessments help learners and parents navigate through this process to ensure that the the correct information is received.
So, what is Subject Choice Guidance?
Subject choice guidance is a deductive process that helps learners and parents wade through all the information to narrow down the most appropriately suited subjects. The process involves exploring the learner’s aptitude (ability to learn a skill), personality, interests, and values to uncover the individual profile. From this, broad career fields are highlighted, and the associated subjects are identified and discussed with the learner and his/her family.
How can we help?
Eike Practice offers individual subject choice guidance assessments for learners who may need help deciding which subjects to continue with to Grade 12. The assessment takes approximately 5-6 hours split over 2 days. After completion of the assessment, the Psychometrist considers all the scores and compiles a comprehensive report outlining the results and the recommended subjects. The report is presented in a 30-40 minute discussion with the learner and parents.
Should you wish to offer your child this opportunity, please get in touch with the EIke Practice team to find out more or make an appointment.
